A Message from Richard Ekman, President
The
Council of Independent Colleges has been extremely fortunate over the
years to have had generous financial support from businesses, corporations,
foundations, and other organizations that have an interest in the well-being
of private colleges and universities. The number of sponsors for the annual
CIC Presidents Institute, the Institute for Chief Academic Officers, and
other conferences and workshops has grown substantially over the years.
In addition, CIC continues to obtain major support for special programs
and projects from leading corporate and privately endowed foundations
in a wide range of areas including information technology, presidential
leadership development activities, the collection and analysis of data
on private higher education, college and community partnerships, topical
seminars for faculty members, and strategic planning. All of us at CIC—presidents
of member institutions, members of the Board of Directors, and staff—are
grateful for this generosity.
At the same time, the success of the relationship between sponsors and
CIC brings its own challenges. We continue to be concerned about giving
sponsors as much visibility as possible since they bring welcome and substantive
expertise to our Institutes. In addition, we remain committed to reporting
on the progress and results of the projects and programs funded by corporations
and foundations in a timely and thorough manner.
CIC very much values the partnerships it has built with funders over
the years—as do the presidents and other leaders of our member colleges
and universities. It is only with such support that CIC will be able to
design and implement programs, projects, and services that continue to
bring innovation and reform to the independent sector of higher education.
I look forward to many more discussions with current and potential funders
about ways in which we might work together to enhance the quality of private
colleges and universities.
Thank you again for your continued interest in, and enthusiasm for, our
mission.
