Degree Qualifications Profile (DQP) Consortium

This two-year project, generously funded by the Lumina Foundation for Education, allowed CIC to work with a select group of independent colleges and universities with the goal of examining the usefulness of the “Degree Qualifications Profile” in improving student learning and increasing the successful completion of baccalaureate degrees at independent colleges and universities. The Degree Qualifications Profile (DQP) attempts to define what students should learn, understand, and know at each degree level and provides a way for institutions to demonstrate the quality of their academic programs by using their own measures of student learning outcomes without the intrusion of state or federally mandated standards. CIC agreed to test the Lumina Foundation’s Degree Qualifications Profile to determine its applicability in the independent liberal arts-oriented college context.

 Current Status

 

Twenty-five CIC colleges and universities were selected to join the CIC/DQP Consortium. The work of the Consortium began late in 2011, with the first meeting held March 8–10, 2012, in Indianapolis, IN, a second meeting held October 18–20, 2012, in Washington, DC, and a final Consortium meeting held August 1–3, 2013 in Indianapolis, IN. An important aspect of the CIC/DQP Consortium was the opportunity to collaborate with other institutional participants and with expert consultants who guided participating institutions through webinars, phone conferences, and regional meetings.

Teams from all of the participating institutions submitted interim reports in July 2012 and February 2013. In October 2013, all teams submitted final reports on their campus projects to CIC. The lessons leared by CIC/DQP Consortium participants are documented in the report, Defining Outcomes, Demonstrating Quality: The CIC Degree Qualifications Profile Consortium.
