2000 CAO Institute Concurrent Sessions

The 28th Annual National Conference for Independent College 
and University

National Study of Student Engagement
Learn about the National Study of Student Engagement (NSSE) which is designed to obtain, on an annual basis, information from scores of colleges and universities nationwide about their student participation in programs and activities that institutions provide for their learning and personal development. Survey items on The College Student Report represent empirically confirmed “good practices” in undergraduate education. Institutions will use their data to identify aspects of the  undergraduate experience inside and outside the classroom that can be improved through changes in policies and practices more consistent with good practices in undergraduate education. Judith Ouimet, the NSSE Associate Project Director and Research Analyst, and a CAO from an independent institution participating in the survey will lead this session.

Basic Legal Issues for Chief Academic Officers at
Independent Colleges and Universities

This session will explore public versus independent higher education legal issues, federal regulations, classroom issues, academic freedom, risk management, and employment issues. The interactive session will be led by an expert in higher education law,
who has 32 years ofexperience. Parker Young, Professor Emeritus of Higher Education, the Institute of Higher Education, the University of Georgia; author of The Yearbook of Higher Education Law and recipient of The McGhehey Award for national leadership in the field of education law.

Current Legal Issues on Independent Campuses
With a higher education law expert and colleagues, discuss legal issues regarding student evaluation, clinical evaluation, internships, distance learning, electronic media, academic integrity, educational malpractice, sexual harassment, liability of CAOs, and risk management. Working with the College/University President

The Future of Faculty Work
As a result of a three-year project to analyze faculty perceptions, the Associated New American Colleges calls for a renewal of the compact between faculty members and their institutions and proposes fresh solutions for long-standing issues in faculty work and institutional relationships. With support from The Pew Charitable Trusts and cognizant of external challenges facing higher education, the project has sought to define a faculty professional model attentive to needs in the faculty-institutional relationship at various stages of the faculty career, effective integration of governance and institutional service, opportunities for faculty workload differentiation, and improvements in institutional recognition and rewards for faculty contributions.

Accelerated Degree Programs
How can CAOs facilitate an accelerated degree program and maintain the integrity of the program?  For accreditation purposes, what faculty and curricular issues need special attention? How does the CAO manage the program for both quality and revenue enhancement? Successes and failures in working with accelerated degree programs will be discussed. Marna E. Technology Decisions for Campus Programs

Delivering the Customer Experience
How can the customer service philosophy taught at the Disney Institute improve independent colleges and universities? Learn how “Delivering the Customer Experience: Keeping the Promise” works and how CAOs who participated in this summer’s CIC/Disney Institute programs are moving toward applying these ideas on campus. Vision for Future Libraries
Academic librarians must re-define themselves and their libraries in the context of the revolution in scholarly communication and the teaching and learning environment. What are the implications for CAOs of these changes? Speakers will outline new visions of the role of libraries and librarians, challenging traditional concepts. To help CAOs understand the key issues for libraries at independent institutions, the CAO Institute will have a session on Vision for Future Libraries  led by  Scottie Cochrane of Denison University and Pat Suozzi of Saint Michael's College.  

General Education Assessment
General education assessment proves a greater challenge than assessing the major for most institutions. The Dordt College assessment program has served as a good model for other institutions. The program includes a social challenge essay, written in the freshman year and again in the senior year. Reviewers of these essays look for indicators of growth and development over the years such as critical thinking. Faculty surveys, alumni surveys, exit interviews, videotaped interviews, and department assessment are also part of the process. Enhancing Faculty Development With Technology
In a series of sessions, the following topics will be covered:

  • identifying the teaching and learning challenges that most faculty members face,

  • discovering how they may be addressed with digital tools, and how these insights may be integrated into campus faculty training and development programs;

  • choosing among course management systems and ensuring that the one chosen is used to enhance student learning rather than simply moving existing content onto the Web;

  • helping faculty make the transition from “sage on the stage” to “guide on the side” through the pedagogically effective use of commonly available and easy to learn digital tools; and

  • gaining access to insights into how to design an effective faculty development program that is focused upon effective pedagogical use of digital tools rather than just on the tools themselves.

The sessions will also provide information about CIC activities planned for 2001 designed to assist campus educators responsible for faculty training and development.

These resources include:

  • On-line, publicly available materials to enhance faculty development programs.

  • CIC’s Teaching and Learning Regional Workshops for 2001 that will be designed to assist faculty, educators with responsibility for faculty development whom we are referring to as Instructional Support Mentors (ISM), and information technology staff who support faculty.

  • Microsoft Mentor program which is designed to assist faculty in learning to use Office 2000 in pedagogically effective ways.

  • Instructional Support Mentors (ISM) on-line community designed to share effective

  • practices and disseminate materials.
