General Theme: K-12 Institutions: The Liberal Arts College's Role and Responsibilities

Topic Sessions:

Teacher preparation; the recruitment of individuals into the teaching profession; teacher certification.
Partnerships between schools and colleges.
National priorities and the core curriculum; the standards movement; "gatekeeping courses;" alternative certification, especially in science and math.
Inter-cultural awareness for both teachers and students; the role of global perspectives; fostering civic involvement.

Opening Plenary Session: Dr. Frank Murray, President, TEAC; and Dr. Arthur Levine, President, Teachers College, Columbia University.

Foundation Facilitators: Individuals representing the following foundations and corporate philanthropy programs: William Randolph Hearst Foundations, Teagle Foundation, AOL-Time Warner Foundation, James Irvine Foundation, Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation, The Heinz Endowments, Pew Charitable Trusts, Carnegie Corporation of New York, and the Edwin Gould Foundation for Children. Additional foundations and corporations are expected to participate.
