Sunday, January 3, Noon–8:00 p.m.
Monday, January 4, 7:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m.
Men and women who are new to the role of presidential spouse usually have no job description or written expectations for their role—nor do they have a peer group on their campuses from whom they can learn—so they may find it difficult to succeed at an undefined job without the assistance of colleagues. To assist new presidential spouses, CIC provides a program led by experienced presidential spouses at private colleges and universities. The CIC New Spouses Program enables participants to become part of a national network of presidential spouses who share ideas and practices as well as support one another in their work.
During the New Spouses Program, about 20 new presidential spouses will work with experienced colleagues to explore how they may design their roles as presidential spouses in ways that utilize distinctive skills to meet specific needs of their institutions. The program will cover a number of topics, including: a framework for the work of presidential spouses, exploring the fit between the talents of the presidential spouse and institutional needs, community and campus activities of presidential spouses, and an “open mike” session during which new presidential spouses may raise specific questions. Because participating in the fundraising work of the institution is often part of the presidential spouse’s role, the new presidential spouses will join the new presidents for their session on “The President and Development: Fundamentals and Then Some” as well as their final workshop session on “You Got the Job, Now What?”
The New Spouses Program includes an informal breakfast discussion on Monday, January 4. Participants will join the presidents for all other meals beginning with the welcoming luncheon.
Lynne C. Joyce, Presidential Spouse, Ripon College and Robert Seurkamp, Presidential Spouse, College of Notre Dame of Maryland are the leaders of this program. Additional experienced presidential spouses will present on specific workshop topics.
