Computational Physics
for Physics Educators Workshop
July 11-17, 2004
Centenary
College
Hackettstown, New Jersey
This summer, the National Computational Science Institute
(NCSI), a National Dissemination Project funded by the National Science
Foundation, will be conducting a week-long, hands-on workshop on enhancing
undergraduate physics education at CIC member institutions. The Workshop
will be under the direction of Dr. Robert M. Panoff, an international
expert on computational physics, executive director of the Shodor Foundation
(www.shodor.org),
and one of the nation’s leading experts on enhancing undergraduate
science education.
The Workshop is designed to provide physics faculty members at CIC institutions
opportunities (1) to explore existing web-accessible physics resources,
(2) to explore tools for modifying and developing resources of their own,
and (3) to build a community of practitioners who would like to continue
to work with Dr. Panoff and NCSI after the Workshop in collaboratively
developing strategies and resources that can enhance undergraduate physics
education at CIC member institutions.
This Workshop will cover various ways that computers can be used to enhance
and expand the educational experience of undergraduates enrolled in the
physics curriculum. Participants in the Workshop will explore how to integrate
interactive explorations into undergraduate physics courses and will learn
to use software tools to develop their own resources. Discussions and
hands-on laboratory exercises on visualization, simulation, modeling,
and mathematical software will be presented. Participants will be expected
to develop and present a case study suitable for use in classroom lecture,
laboratory, web study, or individual study. Interested faculty members
should know that the second half of the Workshop will be mostly designed
by the participants to meet their specific needs.
You may explore resources created by the Shodor Foundation at the Foundation’s
website. We also encourage
you to tell your colleagues about the NCSI Summer Workshops in other disciplines,
all of which are open to CIC faculty.
Several hundred faculty members from CIC institutions have already attended
workshops conducted by Dr. Panoff and NCSI and have expressed great enthusiasm
for them. Indeed, this Physics Workshop emerged out of the interests physicists
expressed in doing a workshop just for them and is an example of how Dr.
Panoff works with faculty to design workshops and resources to meet their
needs.
Expenses
Participants will have all of their expenses paid (excluding travel to
and from Centenary College), and will receive Workshop materials and the
opportunity to apply for mini-grants to assist with software acquisition
and implementation upon successful completion of the Workshop.
Housing
Housing will be in Centenary College’s (www.centenarycollege.edu)
brand new, suite-style, air-conditioned residence hall, and all meals
will be provided by the program.
Travel
The closest airports are Newark, NJ or Allentown, PA. Aries Limo service
provides service to Centenary College; rates are approximately $70 one
way. Call (908) 852-2120.
Registration
CIC faculty members may register for the Physics Workshop at:
