2002 Workshops for Department 
and Division Chairs Speakers

At each Workshop location, presenters will include an attorney familiar with the legal issues confronting chairs and two experts on the work of department chairs. So far, the following educators have agreed to lead Workshops (additional Workshop speakers are still to be confirmed):

Howard Altman, Professor of Modern Languages and Linguistics at the University of Louisville, serves on the national advisory board for the Kansas State University annual Conference on Academic Chairpersons.  A specialist in faculty and chair development, Dr. Altman founded the University of Louisville’s Center for Faculty and Staff Development and served as Executive Director for the Kentucky Consortium on Faculty Development, the first-of-its-kind statewide faculty development network which encompassed all higher education institutions in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Tom Emmet, President of Higher Education Executives Associates, has led more than 100 academic department and division chair workshops for the American Council on Education and many campus workshops for department/division chairs. The former professor and executive assistant to the President of Regis University has consulted with more than 600 institutions on faculty handbooks and faculty academic policy issues. Albany Workshop

Susan D. Gotsch, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty at Hartwick College, has served in that role since 1994.Dr. Gotsch is also Professor of Sociology at the College.For three years, she led the Workshop for New Chief Academic Officers at the CIC Institute for Chief Academic Officers.  She is the current Chair of the American Conference of Academic Deans.  Albany Workshop

Michael A. Grajek, Vice President and Dean of the College at Hiram College since 1997, is also Professor of Mathematics at Hiram.  Earlier in his career, he served as Chairman of the Mathematical Sciences Department at Hiram. Dr. Grajek has been a Consultant-Evaluator for the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and has been a member of numerous NCA site visit teams.  Cleveland Workshop

Stephen J. Hirschfeld, partner in the San Francisco office of Curiale, Dellaverson, Hirschfeld, Kelly & Kraemer, is the Chief Executive Officer of the Employment Law Alliance, the world’s largest alliance of labor and employment lawyers.  His practice in the areas of labor and employment law and related litigation includes extensive experience in counseling higher education institutions. Mr. Hirschfeld frequently speaks at the annual conferences of the National Association of College and University Attorneys as well as the Stetson University National Conference on Law and Higher Education. San Francisco Workshop

Carla Howery, American Sociological Association Deputy Executive Officer, is the co-author of “Effecting Department Change to Build Excellent and Inclusive Sociology Departments.”  She is the managing editor and a writer for the American Sociological Association’s newsletter, Footnotes.  Her work with department chairs includes serving as a frequent presenter at the annual American Sociological Association Chair Conference. Ann Lucas, Professor Emeritus of Organizational Development at Fairleigh Dickinson University, has led workshops for department chairs on 175 college campuses, in addition to more than 100 workshops at national conferences. She is the author of Strengthening Departmental Leadership: A Team-Building Guide for Chairs in Colleges and Universities and Leading Academic Change: Essential Roles for Department Chairs. Kenneth Kolson, Deputy Director of the Division of Research Programs, the National Endowment for the Humanities. Cleveland Workshop

Virginia McKinley, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College at Warren Wilson College, has served in this position since 1995. Prior to becoming chief academic officer, she was a professor of French at Warren Wilson. She is a frequent presenter at CIC conferences and headed the program for women chief academic officers at the Institute for Chief Academic Officers. Charlotte Workshop

Philip Moots is President of Moots, Cope and Stanton, a private law practice of law specializing in legal problems of colleges and universities and employment law. He frequently makes presentations on legal and policy issues to college and university administrators, faculty, attorneys, and trustees. He is on the editorial board of Lex Collegii, a national, legal newsletter for independent higher education.  Cleveland Workshop

Jane Chu Prey, Program Director of the Division of Undergraduate Education, the National Science Foundation. Charlotte and St. Louis Workshops

Dianne F. Sadoff, Professor of English and Chair at Miami University, has served as a Summer Department Chair Seminar leader for the Association of Departments of English.  A frequent conference presenter, she has also been a mock interviewer at the Modern Language Association Convention.  She has served on the Executive Committee of the Association of Departments of English, including a term as president.  Her professional activities include work as an external reviewer for English Departments. St. Louis Workshop

Margaret K. Schramm, Professor of English and Co-Director of the Honors Program at Hartwick College, has also served as Chair of the Department of English and Theater Arts at Hartwick. Since 1998, she has moderated discussions for chairs at the Association of Departments of English Summer Seminars. She has presented papers on “The Academic Blind Date: Information Sharing During a Campus Interview” and “Empowering Job Candidates During a Campus Visit.”  Cleveland Workshop

Terry B. Smith, Vice President and Dean for Academic Affairs at Columbia College (Missouri), has served in that role since 1996. Prior to that he was chief academic officer at Peru State College in Nebraska. Earlier in his career, he was a faculty member in the political science departments at Western Maryland College and the University of Central Arkansas.  Dr. Smith has been a frequent presenter at the CIC Institute for Chief Academic Officers and is one of the conveners of the Missouri Private College Deans. He is an active North Central Association consultant/evaluator. St. Louis Workshop

Kelly Ward, Assistant Professor at Oklahoma State University, co-authored The Department Chair’s Role in Developing New Faculty into Teachers and Scholars. She conducts applied and theoretical research related to faculty development, curricular change, and service learning in post-secondary institutions. She is a member of the editorial board
of the Review of Higher Education.  St. Louis Workshop

Kent Weeks, attorney with the law firm of Weeks, Turner, Anderson & Russell, is also Professor of Practice at the George Peabody College, Vanderbilt University. His writings include Managing Departments: Chairpersons and the Law. Mr. Weeks serves as special counsel to several colleges and universities as well as educational and church-related agencies.  He has addressed college administrators on emerging legal issues and preventive law. Daniel W. Wheeler, Coordinator in the Office of Professional and Organizational Development and Professor of Extension at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, co-authored The Department Chair: New Roles, Responsibilities and Challenges. Dr. Wheeler has made more than 750 conference presentations. He served as consulting editor for the ASHE-ERIC Research Monograph Series and serves on the Advisory Board for The Department Chair. He also has led department chair workshops for both public and private institutions.  Charlotte Workshop
