2004 Workshops for Department
and Division Chairs Leaders
At each Workshop, presenters will include an attorney familiar
with the legal issues confronting chairs, a nationally known expert on
retention, a CIC staff member knowledgeable about the work of department
chairs, and a chief academic officer from a private college or university.
The following leaders have agreed to make presentations at the Workshops
(additional Workshop speakers are still to be confirmed):
Joseph Cuseo, Professor of Psychology and Director of
the Freshman Seminar, Marymount College, is the author
of numerous publications on retention including “Comprehensive Academic
Support for Students During the First Year of College,” in Student
Academic Services: An Integrated Approach, The Transfer Transition: A
Summary of Key Issues, Target Areas, and Tactics for Reform, and is co-author
with John Gardner of the instructor’s manual for Your College Experience:
Strategies for Success. Dr. Cuseo, a former department chair, is a frequent
presenter at the National Conference on Students in Transition, and the
annual Conference on The First-Year Experience.
Kathy Kurz is Vice President of Scannell & Kurz,
Inc., a consulting firm that customizes enrollment management programs
for colleges and universities. A former financial aid administrator at
the University of Rochester and Earlham College, Ms. Kurz is a regular
contributor to University Business and speaks at national conferences
and seminars such as those organized by the Snowmass Institute for Enrollment
Management, the College Board, the National Association of College and
University Business Officers, and the CIC Presidents Institute.
Jerry Pattengale, Assistant Vice President for Academic
Support and Professor of History, Indiana Wesleyan University, speaks
regularly on campuses and at national conferences, including recent engagements
at the National Deans Institute, the National Assessment Workshops for
the First College Year, and The National Conference on Students in Transition.
His current research funded by the Lilly Endowment is focused on understanding
“Millennial” students. Dr. Pattengale is the author of the
leading text on college sophomores, Visible Solutions for Invisible Students:
Helping Sophomores Succeed.
John Schuh, Distinguished Professor of Educational Leader-ship,
Iowa State University and Department Chair, is the author, co-author,
or editor of more than 180 publications including The Life Cycle of the
Department Chair, which will be published by Jossey Bass in 2004. Currently,
he is participating in the National Survey of Student Engagement’s
field-based study, “Documenting Effective Educational Practices,”
which is researching the factors and conditions that lead to improved
graduation rates.
Claire Guthrie Gastañaga, Principal of CG2 Consulting,
is a seminar leader on a variety of higher education management and legal
subjects. She has led department chair workshops for campuses and for
the American Council on Education. As a lawyer, she is often asked to
serve as an expert witness on faculty hiring procedures, academic ethics,
and sexual harassment policies.
Kent Weeks, attorney with the law firm of Weeks, Turner,
Anderson & Russell, is also Professor of Practice at the George Peabody
College, Vanderbilt University. His writings include Managing Departments:
Chairpersons and the Law. Weeks serves as special counsel to several colleges
and universities as well as educational and church-related agencies.
LeVon Wilson, Professor of Business Administration and
Law, Western Carolina University, is the former head of the Department
of Marketing and Business Law at Western Carolina University. He is the
author of numerous articles on higher education law and a frequent conference
speaker, including a presentation at the 2003 CIC Institute for Chief
Academic Officers.
W.H. (Hutch) Bearce, Senior Advisor, Council of Independent
Colleges, formerly served as the chief academic officer at Missouri Valley
College, High Point College, and Central College. He began his postsecondary
service as a chemistry faculty member.
Mary Ann F. Rehnke, Vice President for Annual Programs,
Council of Independent Colleges, is a former faculty member who has also
served as the Associate Dean of the College at the College of St. Catherine.
She edited Liberal Learning and Career Preparation and Is This Good for
Our Students? She works with advisory groups to plan the CIC Department
Chair Workshops.
Vernon Miles, Dean of the College and Professor of English,
Lynchburg College, formerly served as the chief academic officer at Union
College (KY). Earlier in his career he chaired the Department of English,
Communication, and Foreign Languages at Union College. Dr. Miles has often
led sessions at the CIC Institute for Chief Academic Officers, including
the New CAO Workshop.
Terry Smith, Vice President and Dean for Academic Affairs,
Columbia College (MO), has served in that role since 1996. Earlier in
his career, he was a faculty member in the political science departments
at Western Maryland College and the University of Central Arkansas. Dr.
Smith has been a frequent presenter at the CIC Institute for Chief Academic
Officers and spoke at the 2002 CIC Department Chair Workshops. He is an
active North Central Association consultant/evaluator.
Jo Young Switzer, Vice President and Dean for Academic
Affairs and Professor for Communication Studies, Manchester College, is
in her 11th year of service at that institution. Earlier in her career,
she served as chair of the communication department at Manchester. Dr.
Switzer is the author of Interviewing Art and Skill and serves as a consultant-evaluator
for the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association. She
has chaired the CIC CAO Task Force, the national advisory group on academic
issues
at private colleges and universities.
