NOVEMBER 1999
Vol. 1, No. 2

PRESIDENTS EDITION

Welcome to the second issue of Communications Resources. We have some ideas this time to help you think about marketing your institution. Here’s what’s in this edition:

  • George Dehne takes "Another Look at the Future of Private Colleges." (This booklet was sent to presidents along with this edition of Communications Resources. To obtain additional copies contact George Dehne & Associates.)

  • Roanoke College President David Gring’s op-ed from The Roanoke Times, "Why choose a small, private, liberal-arts college." (A reprint of this article was sent with this edition of Communication Resources. To obtain further copies, contact The Roanoke Times.)

  • HOW-TO: Telling your story to the media—practical tips from consultant Frank Dobisky.

  • DATA LINK ON TEACHER QUALITY: Not included here, but readily available on the Internet, the Spring 1999 edition of Education Statistics Quarterly, a new publication from the U.S. Department of Education, leads with three articles on teacher quality and preparation. You can print copies from http://nces.ed.gov.

  • BONUS: A "Food for Thought" piece, "Leadership as a Liberal Art," by Hartwick College professor John Clemens.

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK….

What do you think about Communications Resources? How can we improve it to best serve your needs? Let us know. Contact editor Steve Pelletier, CIC’s vice president for communications, at (202) 466-7230; e-mail spelletier@cic.nche.edu; fax (202) 466-7238.

WANT TO SHARE SOME OF YOUR WRITING?

Since our first edition, we’ve heard from many presidents and campus PR directors. Several have suggested future articles for Communications Resources, and several presidents have asked us to consider some of their writing for future issues. If you have a short speech, op-ed, report or other article that you think would be of interest to your colleague presidents in CIC, send them to Steve Pelletier at CIC. We’re especially looking for articles about values, the return on investment that CIC colleges provide to students, and the meaning of "independent" in independent higher education.
