Welcome to another issue of Communications Resources. This is CIC’s
periodic kit of tools and ideas to help you tell your institution’s
story.
PRESIDENTS SPEAK OUT
Op-ed pieces, speeches, and other expressions of opinion help the public
to understand the issues and challenges of concern to college and university
presidents in the independent sector. The following articles illustrate
some ways that presidents have expressed provocative viewpoints:
-
Public-private state funding issues are the focus of two pieces,
one for the News Tribune in Tacoma by Pacific Lutheran
University (WA) President Loren Anderson, and a second for
the Santa Barbara News-Press by California Lutheran
University (CA) President Luther Luedtke.
Better Funding Will Allow Private
Colleges to Open Up Space (Anderson)
Bill Would Penalize Private Colleges (Luedtke)
-
As lawmakers in Washington currently debate the Higher Education
Act, Clarke College (IA) President Catherine Dunn
urges readers to contact their representatives in Congress to encourage
support of federal student aid programs in an op-ed piece published
this month in the Telegraph Herald.
Proposed Changes in Higher Education
Act Threaten College Affordability
-
Also focusing on Congressional action is Goucher College
(MD) President Sanford Unger, who writes in the Washington Post
about a clause in an appropriations bill that requires an annual campus
program about the U.S. Constitution.
Constitutional Disservice
-
The Utica, NY Observer-Dispatch printed Utica College
(NY) President Todd Hutton's piece on college athletics entitled “Winning
must not be ‘the only thing’.”
Winning Must Not Be 'The Only
Thing'
MAKING THE CASE WEBSITE
CIC last month launched the "Making the Case" section of its
website (www.cic.edu/makingthecase/index.asp).
The site contains a wealth of resources and information that presidents
and other institutional leaders can use to document the effectiveness
of private higher education. More than 280 individuals, including 18 presidents,
from 82 CIC member institutions, first previewed the new website as participants
in one of three "webinars" that showcased the new site and its
contents. If you missed the presentation but still would like to view
it, a recorded
hour-long webinar is posted on the site. Presidents, PR directors,
advancement officials, enrollment managers, information resource directors,
and others on campus who promote the institution may wish to bookmark
the site. You can download any of the charts and information contained
on the site for use in marketing materials, news articles, and presentations.
SCIENCE AND RELIGION ON CAMPUS
Also enclosed are two thoughtful pieces that highlight issues of importance
to many CIC campuses: women in the sciences and the impact of faith-based
higher education.
-
On the subject of whether women excel in the sciences, Judith T.
Levy published a well-substantiated op-ed in the Baltimore Sun.
She is Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College
at Ursinus College (PA).
Many Thriving in the Sciences
-
Northwestern College (MN) President Alan S. Cureton
contributes an insightful February 2005 issue of his Presidential
Monograph Series. Many CIC institutions with values-oriented missions
will be able to relate to his piece, "How religious colleges
and the 'Missionary Generation' can bridge the divide between Red
and Blue America."
How Religious Colleges and the
"Mission Generation" Can Bridge the Divide Between Red and
Blue America
DISTINCTIVE APPROACH
Finally, we enclose a news article that describes a distinctive activity
by one president.
Randolph-Macon College (VA) President Roger Martin describes
his return to the classroom to a Washington Post reporter in
a piece titled, "For College President, a Freshman Refresher Course."

TIMELY TIPS AND MEDIA CONTACTS
John Wall, director of media relations at Juniata College (PA), prepared
"Ten Timely Tips in Media Relations for the Small Shop" for
a recent media relations conference. It is filled with wisdom, including
its first tip encouraging the creation of a Media Contacts Book, but not
for the reason you might expect. Also, CIC Senior Advisor Keith Moore
prepared his very handy "2005 Higher Education Media Contacts List"
for the same June conferencePR directors will want to consult it
to update their ever-changing media contacts lists. Wall's tips and Moore's
list are included here. If you would like a copy of the media contact
list via e-mail, please request it from kmoore@cic.nche.edu.
