MERLOT
The Multimedia
Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT) is
a free, open-source collection of web-based learning materials designed
for faculty members and students in higher education. It features a continually
growing collection of online learning materials, peer reviews, and links
to a range of other materials to help faculty members enhance instruction.
The main organizing principle for these electronic materials is by academic
field, and a dozen disciplinary teams have been reviewing and categorizing
them.
Program Status: CIC's involvement with MERLOT began in summer
2000, when CIC and several collaborating organizationsthe Foundation
for Independent Higher Education, the National Association of Independent
Colleges and Universities, and the National Association of Independent
College and University State Executivesworking together as one partner,
joined with 26 other partner organizations to aid in the development of
MERLOT. In August 2000, CIC invited chief academic officers of independent
colleges and universities to nominate faculty members who could serve
as peer reviewers on the disciplinary panels;
from 83 nominations, seven were selected. CIC's involvement in the MERLOT
initiative concluded in June 2003.
