Open Collections Program Partnership
The CIC/Harvard Open Collections Program (OCP) Partnership provides increased
access for CIC institutions to subject-specific digital collections, drawn
from the Harvard University Library—the largest academic library
system in the world with 15.39 million volumes, 8 million photographs,
and millions of manuscript pages. Through the CIC/Harvard OCP Partnership,
faculty members and librarians at CIC institutions participate in a special
OCP-related listserv through which faculty members exchange views on the
digital collections, and consult with librarians and faculty members at
a range of colleges and universities. Harvard's OCP librarians participate
in the listserv and welcome feedback from CIC members about the usefulness
of materials and suggestions for future OCP developments.
Program Status: Three open collections have been launched since
the program started: "Women Working: 1800–1930" (available
at http://ocp.hul.harvard.edu/ww),
which focuses on women's roles in the U.S. economy between the early 19th
century and the Great Depression; "Immigration to the United States:
1789-1930" (available at http://ocp.hul.harvard.edu/ei/),
which focuses on immigration to the United States between the American
Revolution and the Great Depression; and "Contagion: Historical Views
of Contagious Disease" (available at http://ocp.hul.harvard.edu/contagion),
which focuses on the global, social-history, and public-policy implications
of disease. An additional collection, "The Islamic Heritage Project,"
is under development and will be available in 2008. Currently, more than
90 CIC institutions and 145 faculty members participate in the Partnership
listserv, discussing the collections and other OCP developments.
