IV. Partner Relationships

B. Creating Communications Structures and Advisory Boards

Once partnering begins, the durability of these relationships is likely to be highly dependent on the quality of formal and informal communications structures. At different points in time, especially as the individuals from the several participating organizations change, communications mechanisms may have to be modified and restated. Nevertheless, the essential functions associated with communicating clearly and often are likely to be steadily needed. In a great many cases, advisory boards with representation from all interested campuses and nonprofit constituencies, are likely to prove essential.

  • Allegheny College - Center for Economic and Environmental Development
    In addressing the needs of a wide range of community stakeholders, the Meadville Community Energy Project makes use of an advisory board comprised of state and local officials, private sector representatives, and community leaders.

  • Assumption College - Community Service Learning Program
    The executive director of the Rainbow Center actively participates in CSL planning activities and on its advisory board. Collaboration produced a handbook for agencies (among other contributions to communications).

  • Berry College - Hunger and Homelessness Outreach, Programs, and Education
    A committee of HHOPE meets weekly to plan and discuss strategies. It utilizes resources from the National Coalition against Hunger and Homelessness to organize on-campus presentations and community lectures for middle and high school students as well as for church youth groups. It writes press releases for campus and local newspapers.

  • College Misericordia - The Service Leadership Center
    The Service Leadership Council meets twice yearly to foster communications and bolster support services.

  • College of St. Catherine - Using Technology
    The College's instructional technology specialist faciliates all study group sessions, thus linking all of them.

  • Columbia College, Chicago - Office of Community Arts Partnerships
    Monthly planning meetings were held for all the Urban Missions partners. These sessions permitted honest conversations and the opportunity to make tough project-related decisions.

  • Emory & Henry College - Communities Allied to Uplift Success in Education
    A summer celebration and fall leadership retreat for participants in the summit increases planning and implementational activities.

  • Greensboro College - The Village 401 Project
    An advisory committee is composed of faculty, students, and staff appointed by the president. Focus groups and individual interviews are used. Campus-sponsored "planning breakfasts" were deemed useful.

  • Heritage College - Exemplary Multicultural Practices in Rural Education
    An advisor committee sets policies and conducts assessments. It is chosen from all segnments of the education community.

  • Huntington College - MindScape
    The MindScape advisory board is composed of the program director, the local school corporation's curriculum director, an elementary/middle school principal, and three Huntington College faculty members (liberal arts, education, and recreation management). The board meets monthly to oversee the functioning of the program and to choose avenues for future growth.

  • Illinois College - The Illinois Partnership of Minority Achievement
    The College coordinates a tutoring program, campus visits, and speaker programs.

  • Loyola University New Orleans - The Advisory Committee Model
    A service-learning advisory committee is comprised of faculty, students, administration, staff, and community agency representatives. The committee’s work is accomplished through the following 4 subcommittees, each of which has its own mission statement: Community Partnerships, Evaluation, Faculty Development, and Student Engagement.

  • Maryville College - Just Connections
    The regional network formed a board of directors and hired a community leader as its coordinator in order to focus on grants, workshops, conferences, and other communications requirements. The use of technology (i.e., a web page, list-serve, and e-mail) assists to overcome the communication barriers of a large rural region.

  • Marywood University - The Latino Collaboration
    Agency personnel serve on the program's advisory board. Agency members participate in planning and co-sponsoring continuing education programs. A center serves as an umbrella entity which promotes and sustains collaboration between the school and community.

  • Messiah College - The Harrisburg Institute
    Two comprehensive listening tours were designed to ascertain support for the Initiative on campus and locally. Feedback processes were formalized and an advisory council emerged.

  • New England College - Project Pericles
    In addition to the coordinating entity, further collaboration among partners is facilitated by a committee on civic and social responsibility; it is chaired by a trustee and chancellor of the college. Various constituencies come together to integrate work that needs to be done to reach long-term goals.

  • Otterbein College - Community Service Learning Center
    Student coordinators help connect their peers with community agency representatives in order to provide consistency among programs and good communications.

  • Presbyterian College - Communities Helping, Assisting and Motivating Promising Students
    Parents of youngsters are organized through the Parent's Council; it meets monthly and participates annually in an extended retreat designed for planning and training purposes. These parents, often linked to other families with at-risk children, are also actively involved in various CHAMPS activities. In addition, the Father's Council meets monthly to study the role of fatherhood and assess the impact of absenteeism on the family.

  • Rhodes College - Service Scholars Program
    Student advisory committees include a faculty member, community partner from the service scholar's site and a scholar program staff member who mentors the student. They provide opportunities for communication and reflection.

  • Rhodes College - St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Summer Plus Scholars
    Representatives of all partnering institutions explore the prospects for creating collaborative projects. A coordinating committee meets monthly.

  • St. Thomas University - The Campus and Community Alliance for North Dade
    The Alliance maintains contacts among its members through meetings, community events, and campus-community projects. Community-wide dialogue generates most of the projects undertaken. Plans are made to prepare an annual report with an assessment of results.

  • Tougaloo College - Partnership in Excellence
    The PIE Advisory Coucil was created to support and foster community partnerships. It serves as a strategic forum for identifying and addressing community needs. A community conference, Foundations for Community Partnerships, showcased and serves as a model as to how higher education can facilitate collaboration. A website and online community resource manual are being developed.

  • University of Indianapolis - Parish Nursing
    Health ministry teams help bridge communications needs.
