President to President: In Volume II, published in 2009, SunGard and the Council of Independent Colleges selected CIC member presidents to contribute essays based on their direct experiences with technology. In it, they try to answer a fundamental question: How can we use technology to improve the business of higher education while still honoring its mission? The technologies considered include everything from social media to cloud computing to analytics. In 2005, SunGard Higher Education published a first volume of President to President: Views on Technology in Higher Education, which addressed the strategic role of technology in transforming institutional operations. CIC STUDY OF PRESIDENTIAL CAREER PATTERNS: CIC’s report, “A Study of Career Patterns of the Presidents of Independent Colleges and Universities,” examines the various career routes and other characteristics of first-time presidents. Using data from the American Council on Education’s American College President Study, CIC analyzed the career pathways; demographic characteristics such as gender, race/ethnicity, and age; major field of study; and sense of readiness for various presidential responsibilities of first-time American college and university presidents from 1986 to 2006. 2009, 26 pgs. THE FIRST 120 DAYS: The premise of the book is that in the first 120 days, a new college or university president determines whether his or her tenure will be highly successful—or less than flourishing. Those first four months are a harbinger of the president's promise and fate. This book is written by Jerold Panas, an executive partner of one of the nation's premier higher education consulting firms, and is published by Institutions Press. 2008, 232 pgs. EVIDENCE
OF LEARNING: This report highlights the experiences of the 33 members of CIC's Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) Consortium over the past three years as they used the CLA to measure student learning outcomes. AND THE LIBERAL ARTS: This report highlights the second symposium on business and the liberal
arts held by CIC with support from the James S. Kemper Foundation. The
symposium, held in Chicago on May 2007, brought together faculty members
and administrators from 24 colleges and universities to discuss programmatic
examples of how studies in business and the liberal arts can be successfully
combined, as well as strategies that independent liberal arts colleges
and universities are employing to respond to the declining proportion

MEETING
THE CHALLENGE: This book, prepared as part of the recognition of CIC's 50th anniversary, is comprised of three essays written for general audiences. The first, by historian John Thelin, reviews the evolution of independent colleges and universities in American higher education since the 1950s. The second, by former U.S. News & World Report editor Alvin Sanoff, examines the present contributions and current status of these institutions. TRANSITIONS IN PRIVATE COLLEGES: This book on college and university presidential transitions is written for presidents, presidential candidates, and trustees. Because the average tenure for college presidents is just under seven years, and there are 4,200 accredited and degree-granting institutions in the United States, some 600 new presidents are chosen each year. About half of all presidencies end within five years. Particularly on small, private liberal arts campuses, presidential transitions generate anxiety and require more activity than almost any other institutional change. The authors intend for this book to provide a roadmap for those who find themselves leading the process of presidential transition.
