Registration Deadline Nears for Teaching and Learning Workshops

There is still time to register for some of the five regional Teaching and Learning Workshops CIC is sponsoring this spring. These workshops will help colleges prepare faculty members to become experts in the use of technology. Participants will gain skills and resources that will prepare them to serve as mentors who can assist their colleagues in using technology to improve student learning. Teams of faculty members with strong information technology and teaching skills, leaders in faculty development activities, and IT staff members are encouraged to attend. Chief academic officers are also welcome..

Workshop Topics
Topics to be discussed at the Teaching and Learning Workshops include:

  • Defining goals for a learner-centered faculty development program.
  • Assessing institutional resources available to support faculty development programs.
  • Determining the goals that are achievable with existing resources in the context of institutional priorities.
  • Developing a plan with concrete objectives and strategies to achieve these realistic goals—who does what, when, with which tools and resources, with which faculty?
  • Creating ownership of and leadership for this plan on campus.
  • Developing indicators of faculty and student progress toward the achievement of the goals.
  • Developing strategies for assessing campus resources for faculty development against a set of reasonable benchmarks for small, independent colleges and universities.

The workshops will be held April 6-7 in Portland, OR; May 22-24 in Raleigh, NC; May 30-June 1 in Des Moines, IA; and June 5-7 in both Nashville, TN and Albany, NY.

Colleges To Hear "What the Media Wants from Faculty"

Journalists from national newspapers, magazines, and online news outlets will speak to campus representatives at an upcoming workshop, "What the Media Wants from Faculty." Editorial director of Newsweek Online Peter McGrath, editor of new media for The Chronicle of Higher Education Phil Semas, and editor of Money.net Jill Kasky will address "Finding Online Action in Higher Education." Education reporter for Time magazine Jodie Morse and the senior editor (Parenting) for Woman's Day Ellen Breslau will discuss "Covering Faculty Expertise and Ideas."
The workshop is co-sponsored by Keith Moore Associates and CIC. It will be held June 20, 2001 at the Warwick Hotel & Towers, located in the historic Rittenhouse Square District in downtown Philadelphia. The workshop precedes the 15th annual media conference, "How Colleges Can Obtain National (and Regional) Publicity." Both the conference and workshop previously were held for 13 years in nearby Harrisburg.
For conference details, contact CIC Senior Advisor Keith Moore at KMoore@keithmooreassociates.com or call (301) 871-6522. Special discounted prices are available, as well as a new assistance program, the Margaret Pitek Ciervo Scholarship, for news officers who need funding to attend.

College Leadership Teams To Participate in Disney Institute

The Student Experience: Keeping the Promise

Disney Institute
Lake Buena Vista, Florida • July 8-10, 2001

College presidents will lead teams from CIC member colleges and universities this summer in a program on "service quality," tailored specifically for private college and university leadership teams by CIC and the Disney Institute.
During this 2-1/2 day program held at Disney World in Florida, institutional teams—with peers from other colleges and universities—will learn from the strategies and philosophies that Disney uses to build and deliver a positive "guest" experience.
    Among the program themes:

  • Defining the Campus Promise. Participants will consider the keys to success in customer service at Walt Disney World and their applicability to educational institutions.
  • Leading the Service Culture. By demonstrating passion for the vision, encouraging involvement, and being models of the values of a service culture, leaders can ensure employees' commitment to the promise. Following a discussion of leadership accountability, each team will develop plans for a student-focused environment on its own campus.
  • Creating the Student Experience. Campus teams will examine the connection between high quality student experiences and overall organizational growth, and will be able to make connections to their own "customer" base.
  • Enriching the Employee Experience. Participants will explore the link between employee enthusiasm and outstanding service to students. Through discussion and field experience, teams will discover ways to gain the involvement of all campus employees in fulfilling the promise of the college.
