Many
of the major addresses and sessions at the 2009 Presidents
Institute in Bonita Springs, Florida, January 4–7 examined
the impact of the current economic crisis on the future of
the nation’s independent colleges and universities under
the theme of “Investing in the Future.” The conference—with
near-record participation of presidents (312) and spouses
(167)—also featured distinguished speakers on a number
of other important topics. Podcasts of some of the major plenary
addresses are available, as are many of the powerpoint presentations
and handouts, in addition to a photo slideshow of the Institute.
The
spring workshops will focus on creative leadership with limited
resources. Department chairs will learn practical strategies
for improving their work and will have opportunities to explore
these ideas with colleagues.
The
June 22–24 College Media Conference in Baltimore will
feature top journalists from the nation’s major news
media. The event is designed to help campus PR directors and
communications professionals develop techniques and strategies.
Although
the priority deadline for applying for a Visiting Fellow has
passed, applications are still being accepted. Institutions
that submit applications early are more likely to be matched
with their first-choice Fellow.
