WASHINGTON, DC — The recipients of the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) annual academic awards for 2007 are Terrence Russell, executive director of the Association for Institutional Research (AIR) and Courtesy Professor of Higher Education and Policy Studies at Florida State University, who received CIC’s Academic Leadership Award, and Ferol Schricker Menzel, vice president of academic affairs and dean of the faculty at Wartburg College, who was presented with CIC’s Chief Academic Officers Award. The awards were bestowed during the Chief Academic Officers Institute held at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in November.

Russell was honored for his contributions to academic programs and leaders at private colleges and universities. He has served more than 175 private colleges and universities through the development and leadership of the Data and Decisions Workshops jointly sponsored by CIC and AIR, since 2002. Russell served on a National Academy of Sciences study panel evaluating the NIH minority research training programs, the Technical Advisory Committee for the National Survey of Postsecondary Faculty, the National Advisory Board of the American Council on Education–UCLA Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP), and the Advisory Committee for the Policy Center for the First Year of College. Before joining AIR in 1991, Russell was director of professional services and survey research for the American Chemical Society and visiting associate professor of sociology at Georgetown University. Earlier, he served as a faculty member at Illinois Wesleyan, Illinois State, and Northern Kentucky Universities. He has written about academic-industry relations, ethics and values in science, the science and technology labor force, and higher education policy.

During the award presentation, CIC President Richard Ekman noted that Russell “is a global leader in advancing data-informed decision-making, who has worked diligently to ensure that small and mid-sized private institutions benefit from the professionalization of institutional research. He has been an instrumental player in promoting public policy decisions regarding data collection and ensuring that the needs of CIC institutions are represented, and he has served many CIC administrators through the development and leadership of the Data and Decisions Workshops since 2002.”

Menzel was honored for being instrumental in preparing new chief academic officers for their work at private colleges and universities. She has served as a co-leader of the CIC New Chief Academic Officers Workshop for three years and assisted in creating, as well as presenting, the Workshop for CAOs in their Third or Fourth Year of Service. She has strengthened CIC institutions by presenting at the CIC Department Chair Workshops and the Transformation of the College Library Workshops. Earlier in her career, Menzel served Grand View College in several roles including vice president for student life and enrollment management and interim vice president of finance. She chairs the advisory committee of the Faculty Development and Technology Integration Program at the Iowa College Foundation and is a member of the board of trustees of The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Ekman congratulated Menzel for her dedicated service, noting that she “has distinguished herself as a valuable colleague by widely sharing her wisdom and expertise on achieving excellence in academic programs, forming more effective policies, and learning from best practices.”
