WILCOX HIRED TO DIRECT COMMUNICATIONS AT THE COUNCIL OF
INDEPENDENT COLLEGES

WASHINGTON, DC The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC)
has appointed Laura Wilcox as its Director of Communications. As communications
director, she oversees CIC publications, electronic communications, and
public affairs.
Wilcox comes to CIC from the American Council on Education (ACE) in Washington,
where she has been assistant director for public affairs since 1994. At
ACE, she served as managing editor of Higher Education and National
Affairs, the associations public policy newsletter. In addition,
she coordinated the "College is Possible campaign, involving
nearly 1,300 institutions and associations, and was responsible for the
creation and implementation of a weekly online newsletter for college
presidents.
CIC President Richard Ekman says, "Lauras extensive knowledge
of the higher education community, as well as her two decades of experience
as a public affairs professional, Capitol Hill staffer, and radio news
reporter, make her a terrific addition to our leadership team.
She succeeds Steve Pelletier, who left the Council last October after
17 years to accept a position as head of publications at NAFSA: Association
of International Educators.
CIC's new communications head started as a news anchor and reporter-producer
for radio stations in Jacksonville, Fla., and Herndon and Manassas, Va.
She also was a public affairs associate at the Urban Institute in Washington,
D.C., deputy press secretary for Senator Lloyd Bentsen (D-TX) on the Senate
Finance Committee, and worked on the staffs of Rep. Charles Schumer (D-NY)
and Senator Bill Bradley (D-NJ).
Wilcox earned her bachelor of arts degree in journalism from Kent State
University and a master of arts in legislative affairs from George Washington
University.
The Council of Independent Colleges is an association of nearly 500
independent colleges and universities that work together to strengthen
college and university leadership, sustain high-quality education, and
enhance private higher educations contributions to society. To fulfill
this mission, CIC provides its members with skills, tools, and knowledge
that address aspects of leadership, financial management and performance,
academic quality, and institutional visibility.
