WASHINGTON, DC – The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) has appointed Laura Wilcox as its Director of Communications. As communications director, she oversees CIC publications, electronic communications, and public affairs.

Wilcox comes to CIC from the American Council on Education (ACE) in Washington, where she has been assistant director for public affairs since 1994. At ACE, she served as managing editor of Higher Education and National Affairs, the association’s public policy newsletter. In addition, she coordinated the "College is Possible” campaign, involving nearly 1,300 institutions and associations, and was responsible for the creation and implementation of a weekly online newsletter for college presidents.

CIC President Richard Ekman says, "Laura’s extensive knowledge of the higher education community, as well as her two decades of experience as a public affairs professional, Capitol Hill staffer, and radio news reporter, make her a terrific addition to our leadership team.”

She succeeds Steve Pelletier, who left the Council last October after 17 years to accept a position as head of publications at NAFSA: Association of International Educators.

CIC's new communications head started as a news anchor and reporter-producer for radio stations in Jacksonville, Fla., and Herndon and Manassas, Va. She also was a public affairs associate at the Urban Institute in Washington, D.C., deputy press secretary for Senator Lloyd Bentsen (D-TX) on the Senate Finance Committee, and worked on the staffs of Rep. Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Senator Bill Bradley (D-NJ).

Wilcox earned her bachelor of arts degree in journalism from Kent State University and a master of arts in legislative affairs from George Washington University.

The Council of Independent Colleges is an association of nearly 500 independent colleges and universities that work together to strengthen college and university leadership, sustain high-quality education, and enhance private higher education’s contributions to society. To fulfill this mission, CIC provides its members with skills, tools, and knowledge that address aspects of leadership, financial management and performance, academic quality, and institutional visibility.
